BEST BEACH FOR: Anyone looking to catch their first wave.
This is it. Laguna Beach’s most widely-known surf break. The most optimal (and really only) learning spot in town. A beach so beloved that by midsummer many families don’t even discuss their Saturday plans – it’s all Thalia Street, all the time.
For what it’s worth, Thalia Street Beach deserves its much fawned-over status. The surf break is gentle, consistent, and ride-able on more days than any other spot in the city. It’s also an easy walk to Main Beach or Downtown. In the summers and on weekends, the local middle school kids congregate at the bottom of the stairs – crowded around the lifeguard tower. Walk 30-feet north, and you’re sure to find a little more space. To the south, the beach is a few feet narrower but still offers plenty of room on most tides.
Getting to the beach is a matter of parking at a metered spot on Thalia Street itself or grabbing a spot on Glenneyre Street. If you’re surfing for the first time, either get a lesson or be sure to follow the basic rules of the ocean. Most days, Thalia is a classic “party wave” and all are welcome. Still, it’s important that people have a bit of etiquette and know their limits.
