KX 93.5 Changes its Frequency to 104.7

On Feb. 3, KX 93.5, Laguna’s Only FM station, will officially switch frequencies to 104.7 FM. The change comes after nearly eight years of broadcasting on 93.5 and being interfered upon by a Los Angeles station on the same channel.The new frequency will allow for better coverage in all of Laguna Beach, and some new areas like the fringes of Dana Point, Corona Del Mar, Laguna Niguel and Aliso Viejo, according to Station Founder Tyler Russell. The station will be known as “KX FM.”

“This is obviously a big change for us, but it’s a long time coming for our audience,” said Russell. “From day one in 2012, we heard complaints from listeners in Top of the World, Arch Beach Heights, South Laguna and Laguna Canyon Road that they couldn’t hear us. It’s always been a good problem to have that people want to hear the station in more places, and we’re happy to have finally found a remedy.”

KX FM on 104.7 will now also broadcast in HD, which creates a clearer signal, more reliable song information on the screen in the car and allows for the later addition of secondary “sub-channels,” something the KX FM staff does plan to do. Russell believes KX FM will be the only low-power FM radio station in the country to utilize HD Radio, normally only reserved for larger, corporate stations.He hopes people who have never listened to the station or ceased listening long ago will give it another shot after Feb. 3. KX FM also plans to revise its programming in the coming months to feature more “classic alternative” music and an even more in-depth focus on the Laguna community, as the only FCC-licensed radio station in the city’s history.

KX FM is live, local and non-syndicated almost all hours of the day, another unique factor for a station of its size. On weekdays, “Ed In the Morning” airs 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., Russell broadcast 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Music Director Alyssa Hayek is on 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Live community hosts take over on nights and weekends.

KX FM on 104.7 is on the air now, so Russell encourages you to go ahead and set your pre-set in your car and start listening. He does want to remind that the station is still a 100-watt low-power, so there will be areas it does not cover, but you can listen online at the new web address KXFMRadio.org, on TuneIn or on the Android/iPhone apps.

KX FM, locally-operated by Laguna Radio Inc, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. With the expenses of the frequency switch, Russell says the station needs tax-deductible memberships for individuals and businesses more than ever before. Information is available at KXFMRadio.org/join.
